Upper GI Series

This is an examination of the esophagus and stomach. Patients typically fast from the night before. An initial x-ray of the abdomen is obtained prior to the exam. You will be given gas forming granules to swallow and barium to drink. The radiologist watches the movement of the barium through the esophagus and stomach on the fluoroscopy monitor and will obtain several images at different positions followed by several standard images by the technologist.

What are some common indications?

→ Ulcers.
→ Inflammation of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum.
→ Tumors.
→ Hiatal hernias.
→ Scarring.
→ Blockages.

Preparations:

For an optimal exam, the stomach must be empty. It is important not to eat or drink anything for at least 4 hours before your exam.
