Ultrasound

How does ultrasound work?  Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the internal organs and blood vessels.  A transducer held by the technician is placed on the patient’s body.  A sound wave is send into the area of interest that is reflected back to the transducer.  The signal is then converted by the ultrasound machine into an image visualized on the ultrasound monitor.

Sonography/Ultrasound Preparations:

Abdomen:  No eating or drinking for 6-8 hours prior to the study.

Abdomen and pelvis:  No eating 6-8 hours prior to the study.  Start drinking 16 Oz. of water ½ hour prior to your study and another 16 Oz.  of water when you arrive at the facility.  Do not empty your bladder after drinking water.  The bladder must be full for this exam.

Gallbladder:  No eating or drinking for 6-8 hours prior to the study.

Liver:  No eating or drinking for 6-8 hours prior to the study.

Obstetrical Sonogram ( 6 wks to 12 wks):  Start drinking 16 Oz. of water ½ hour prior to your study and another 16 Oz.  of water when you arrive at the facility.  Do not empty your bladder after drinking water.  The bladder must be full for this exam.

Renal Sonogram:  No preparation needed.

Renal and Pelvic Sonogram:  Start drinking 16 Oz. of water ½ hour prior to your study and another 16 Oz.  of water when you arrive at the facility.  Do not empty your bladder after drinking water.  The bladder must be full for this exam.

Trans-vaginal Sonogram:  No preparation needed.

Renal Artery Doppler:  No eating or drinking for 6-8 hours prior to the study.

Liver Doppler:  No eating or drinking for 6-8 hours prior to the study.

Upper and Lower extremity venous and arterial Doppler:  No preparation needed.

Carotid artery Doppler:  No preparation needed.

Sono-hysterogram:
→ Schedule the exam 7-10 days after the onset of menstruation
→ No sexual intercourse from the first day of menstrual cycle
→ Recommend taking 2 Motrin/Advil/Tylenol pills 2 hour prior to exam. (Don’t take if allergic)
→ Bring maxi pad
