Ultrasound-Guided Breast biopsy is considered a minimally invasive procedure as an alternative to open surgical biopsy to evaluate masses in the breast that are visualized on ultrasound. This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and requires little recovery time with no significant scarring to the breast.

What are indications for ultrasound-guided breast biopsy?

→ A suspicious solid mass.
→ A palpable mass.
→ Distortion in the structure of the breast tissue.
→ An area of abnormal change in the breast.

How is the procedure performed?

An initial ultrasound will be performed on your breast by a technologist to confirm the area of abnormality. The radiologist will clean your breast with an antiseptic, and numb the area of breast in question by injecting a local anesthetic. The radiologist will make a tiny incision and advanced a biopsy needle taking several samples of the suspicious area. The samples are sent to a pathology lab for evaluation.

What to expect after the procedure?

Once the procedure is completed, typically stereostrip tape is placed on the incision. A nurse will cover the incision site with a bandage and apply pressure to stop any possible bleeding. Patients are asked to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours after the procedure. Tylenol can be used for relief of any discomfort as well as a cold pack. Your Doctor will receive the results within one week after the procedure.
