What is stereotactic biopsy?

Stereotactic biopsy is a minimally invasive form of breast biopsy that is performed as an alternative to surgical biopsy. In this procedure, specialized digital mammography equipment is used to guide the Radiologist in obtaining small samples of an abnormal area in the breast.

This procedure is performed typically after mammography has detected an abnormality that requires further evaluation to determine whether the abnormality is benign or cancerous.

What are common reasons for stereotactic biopsy?

→ Mammography has demonstrated a suspicious nodule or suspicious microcalcifications.
→ Nodule or lump shown on mammography that is not visible on ultrasound (biopsy using   ultrasound for guidance cannot be performed).
→ An area of distortion in the breast architecture seen on a mammogram.
→ New suspicious findings in an area of previous surgery.

What to expect expect during the procedure?

This procedure can take from 30-60 minutes. For this procedure you will be asked to lie face down on a special biopsy table. The breast in questionable will be positioned through a round opening in the table. The breast is then compressed similar to a mammogram. The first step is to clean the skin and inject a local anesthetic. A small incision is made in the skin and the biopsy needle is advanced to the area of abnormality. Several samples are obtained and a final set of images are obtained. A small clip is left at the biopsy site so that it can be easily located in further investigation as needed. Subsequently a nurse will cover the incision site with a bandage and apply pressure to stop any possible bleeding. A mammogram may be performed to confirm that the marker is in the proper position.

What to expect after the procedure?

→ Avoid strenuous activity for 24-48 hours after the biopsy. You may take an over-the-counter pain reliever and use a cold pack.
→ Contact your physician if you experience excessive swelling, bleeding, drainage, redness or heat in the breast.
→ Our nurse will contact you the next day as a followup.
→ Your Dr. will receive the results within one week after the procedure.
